Not positive, but followers may be getting stuck in town because they are unable to go back into the portal due to the speed hack being on.
You and I both know that with the speed hack on the bot has trouble opening the portal, that's why you turn it off before it tries to open the portal and turn it back on after it has entered.
If the followers are in town they need to walk and take the portal just like the leader.
